ok so I know this combo gets a LOT of hate online. every compatibility article is like "water and fire, too different, doomed" blah blah blah
but I'm a scorpio sun and my partner is a sag and we've been together for almost 3 years now and genuinely... it works??
here's what I think makes it click for us:
the honesty thing. scorpios love deep truth and sagittarians literally cannot help but be direct. we never play games with each other. if something bothers me, I say it. if something bothers him, he says it. done.
we make each other grow. he pushes me to stop being so intense about everything and just enjoy life sometimes. I help him actually sit with his feelings instead of running off to the next adventure.
the depth vs breadth thing balances out. I want to go DEEP on a few things. he wants to explore EVERYTHING. turns out we complement each other instead of clash.
the key honestly is that scorpios have to give sags freedom and trust them. and sags have to actually show up emotionally when it counts. when both people do their part it's actually really beautiful.

Really glad you shared this - it's a great example of why sun sign compatibility is just one piece of a much bigger picture.
Scoprio-Sagittarius sits at a 30° angle (semi-sextile), which is actually one of the more interesting aspects. There's enough difference to create friction AND enough common ground to build something real. Both signs have enormous passion - Scorpio channels it inward with intensity, Sagittarius projects it outward with enthusiasm.
What you're describing - Scorpio providing depth and Sagittarius providing expansion - is textbook complementary energy when both people are self-aware. The growth dynamic you mentioned (you learning to lighten up, him learning to sit with feelings) is exactly what a healthy version of this pairing looks like.
The freedom piece is key. Fixed water signs can unconsciously try to contain mutable fire, and that's where this pairing usually struggles. Sounds like you've both figured out the balance.
the "scorpios give freedom, sags show up emotionally" thing is so perfectly said. my last sag relationship failed bc neither of us did our part lol. this gives me hope for future attempts
3 years!! that's amazing. my scorpio/sag situationship only lasted like 4 months before the intensity vs wanderlust thing blew up
but reading this I can see we were both just being the worst versions of our signs tbh. neither of us were doing the work you're describing
