ok so I've been doing tarot for about two years and reading for OTHER people feels completely natural at this point. but reading for myself?? disaster lol
like I'll pull a card about a situation I'm stressed about and immediately my brain just... decides what it means before I've even thought about it. if it's a 'good' card I'm like 'yes!! confirmed!!' and if it's something harder I start doing mental gymnastics to make it mean something positive. it's embarrassing how obvious it is when I look back at my journal
I tried a few things that actually helped. first was writing down my question before I pulled, then writing my FIRST instinct about the card before I looked at any meaning online. that first gut reaction is usually where the real message is, even when I don't want to hear it
the other thing that helped was pretending I was reading for a friend. like same cards, same spread, but I'd describe the situation in third person - 'my friend is going through X, what do these cards say?' sounds silly but it really does help me get out of my own head
anyone else have this problem? what's helped you?
omg yes this is me completely. I pulled the 10 of pentacles for a job I REALLY wanted and convinced myself it was a sure thing. spoiler: did not get it lol
but I did learn to journal right after pulls before I check my feelings and it's been a game changer honestly
The cards whisper most clearly when we can get quiet enough to listen - and that's genuinely harder when it's your own life on the line.
What you've discovered about the 'third person trick' is something I recommend to every reader I mentor. Distance creates space for truth. You might also try pulling a card for 'what do I NOT want to hear about this situation?' - it bypasses our defenses in a really interesting way.
Trust your inner knowing. The fact that you've noticed the pattern means you're already most of the way there.
the third person thing is genius I'm trying this tonight
I had a reader friend tell me to wait 24 hours before interpreting cards about anything I'm emotionally invested in. like pull them, write them down, put them away. come back the next day with fresh eyes
it's so hard to do but when I manage it the reading makes so much more sense
oh wow the 'what don't I want to hear' thing is brilliant Sarah!! adding that to my practice for sure. and yeah WillowBreeze the 24 hour thing is hard but I've done it a couple times and you're right - way clearer
