ok so I was doing a reading about a friend group situation. got the five of wands (makes sense, there's been drama) and then pulled the three of cups reversed to clarify what's going on underneath.
how does that clarify anything?? isn't three of cups reversed like... exclusion? but if there's already conflict wouldn't it just be saying the same thing?
or is it saying that the drama is BECAUSE of the exclusion thing? like someone's feeling left out and that's causing the tension?
help lol I'm going in circles
Oh sweet one, clarifiers can be tricky! The cards whisper layers here...
Yes, I think you're onto something. Five of Wands shows the surface conflict - the arguing, the drama you can see. Three of Cups reversed as clarifier points to the root cause.
Someone in this group is feeling like the outsider. Maybe they're being excluded from hangouts, or they feel like the third wheel. And that exclusion is what's fueling all the visible drama.
Trust your inner knowing on this. Who might be feeling left out?
omg clarifier cards always do this to me. I pull them thinking they'll make things clearer and then I'm like wait what
but yeah I agree with Sarah, it sounds like the clarifier is pointing to WHY there's conflict not just describing it again
three of cups reversed in friendship stuff almost always means someone's feeling left out ime. like there's a clique forming and not everyone's in it
ok update!! talked to my friend and you were all right. turns out she's been feeling super left out because two of us have been hanging out more without inviting her (honestly we didn't even realize we were doing it that much)
the cards really called it. we had a good conversation and things already feel better
thank you sarah and everyone for helping me see it wasn't just random conflict. sometimes you need that outside perspective ya know
this thread is so helpful! I always struggle with clarifier cards too. love that you came back with an update - so satisfying when the reading clicks into place after some real world info
omg I love when the cards make sense in hindsight like this!! three of cups reversed being about someone feeling left out is such a perfect clarifier actually
I had a similar thing where I pulled the hermit reversed as a clarifier for a friendship reading and couldn't figure it out... turns out my friend was isolating because of depression and just needed me to reach out more. sometimes the clarity comes after you take action
omg found this thread searching for exactly this and so glad I did
I always thought clarifiers were just supposed to say the same thing in different words but Sarah K's point about root cause vs symptom is changing how I see them completely
like the five of wands was the WHAT and the three of cups reversed was the WHY. that distinction is huge
and the update from OP confirms it!! honestly this is why I love this forum
this thread honestly changed how I approach clarifier cards. I used to just give up when they confused me but now I realize they're answering a different question than I think they are
like the first card says WHAT and the clarifier says WHY. that's such a useful frame, thank you
omg I literally went through the same confusion with a clarifier pull last month
I had the five of pentacles and pulled the three of cups reversed to clarify and was like... how is this helping me understand anything lol
but the way I eventually made sense of it was: the clarifier isn't always explaining the energy, it's sometimes showing you the ROOT. so the five of wands is the symptom and three of cups reversed is the cause
like the tension (five of wands) exists BECAUSE of the exclusion thing (three of cups reversed). someone feeling left out of the group is literally what sparked the conflict. which honestly? that interpretation makes a lot of sense for most friend group drama
found this thread while looking up exactly this situation!!
always thought clarifier cards would just... clarify lol. but the symptom vs root cause thing is genuinely changing how I read them
I pulled the ace of swords reversed as a clarifier once and was so lost until I reframed it as "what's really causing this" instead of "what is this situation". suddenly it all clicked
thank you for documenting this so well, and for the update too!! love seeing when readings actually make sense in hindsight
