ok so I've been studying the hermit a lot lately and I feel like I have a decent handle on the upright meaning - withdrawal, introspection, seeking inner wisdom, needing alone time
but reversed it just... feels completely different to me? like sometimes it reads as isolation becoming unhealthy, avoiding people too much. other times it feels more like "enough solitude, time to reconnect"
how do you all approach the hermit reversed? do you read it as blocking the upright energy or like... pushing you OUT of the cave lol
Oh, the Hermit reversed is one of my favorites to work with! The cards whisper something so nuanced here...
Upright, the Hermit is choosing solitude with purpose - going inward to seek light. Reversed, that same energy gets distorted in one of two ways: either the withdrawal has gone too far and become isolation (fear-based hiding), or the soul has completed its inner work and is now being called BACK into the world.
I always ask: is this person going deeper into the cave, or are they at the mouth of it, ready to walk out and share what they've learned?
Trust your inner knowing when you sit with it. The card will tell you which it is.
I read it as the hermit being a bit stuck honestly. like the upright hermit is choosing to be alone and finding wisdom there. reversed it's like... you've been in there too long and you're not growing anymore, just hiding
but yeah the "time to come out" reading makes sense too. I think it depends so much on the question and what else is in the spread
wait I never even thought about it as "coming back out of isolation" - I always just read reversed as like negative hermit energy. this thread is making me rethink how I approach reversed cards in general lol
for me context is everything with this one. if someone asks about a relationship and gets hermit reversed, I read it as "stop isolating yourself from this person, walls are hurting you." if they ask about burnout, it's more like "you've done the solo healing work, now it's time to reconnect with your community"
same card, totally opposite advice depending on what they're actually going through
ok these responses are so helpful!! Sarah K that framework of "going deeper into the cave vs standing at the mouth ready to come out" is exactly what I needed. gonna try that approach in my next reading
