so I've been practicing on my own for about 2 years now — mostly tarot and a bit of astrology — and honestly I love it. it's become such a personal thing for me.
but lately I've been feeling kind of isolated? like my family just... doesn't get it. they're not mean about it but they don't ask questions or want to hear about what I'm learning. I just want to talk to someone who actually cares lol
how have you all found community around this stuff? online, local, anywhere? I tried reddit but it's so overwhelming, there's just SO much and it doesn't feel very personal
like is there a way to find your people without it feeling like scrolling through a wall of strangers??
omg I felt this so hard when I started out. my family thought I was going through a phase lol
what actually worked for me was finding a small discord server — not one of the huge ones with thousands of people, but like a cozy one with maybe 200 members. someone in a bigger group posted the invite and I just kind of... stayed. it felt way more personal than reddit
also my local metaphysical shop does events on weekends sometimes, like card reading circles. I went once just to see and ended up exchanging numbers with two people. definitely worth checking if there's anything like that near you!
honestly I think we put too much pressure on finding a whole community at once. like it doesn't have to be a group
I started with just one friend who was curious and willing to let me read her cards. she's not into it the way I am but she asks questions and listens. that's enough for now
maybe start small? even one person who's open to it makes such a difference
In all my years of practice — and it has been quite a few decades now — I've watched the way spiritual community has transformed completely.
When I started out, everything was local or nothing. I found my first circle through a small herb shop that posted a handwritten notice on their board. You showed up not knowing anyone, shared tea, and somehow by the end of the evening you'd made friends who understood you in a way your neighbors never would.
The internet changed all of that, of course. And I think the old ways and the new ways both have something to offer. Online connections are real — don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But there's also something about sitting in a room together that goes deep.
My advice: look for the quiet corners. Small shops, community boards at co-ops or yoga studios, a local library that hosts talks on alternative spirituality. The people who are drawn to those spaces tend to be the same kind of people you're looking for — thoughtful, genuine, not trying to perform their practice for anyone.
You've already done two years of solitary work. That's a strong foundation. Your people will recognize that in you.
thank you all so much, this is exactly what I needed to hear
Margaret T — the image of a handwritten notice in a herb shop made me tear up a little, not gonna lie. and the idea of looking for quiet corners instead of big overwhelming spaces just... clicked for me
I'm going to look up if there's a metaphysical or crystal shop near me and see if they have anything going on. even just walking in and browsing feels less scary than joining a 10,000 person discord lol
will report back!
