ok so I feel like I have a pretty good handle on the magician upright - willpower, manifestation, having all the tools you need, taking action etc
but when it comes up reversed I always second guess myself. some sources say its about manipulation or trickery, others say its more about untapped potential or not using your skills
do you read it as the "opposite" of upright or more like a blocked/shadow version? would love to hear how other people approach this
for me reversed magician is less about being a trickster and more about self-doubt?? like you HAVE the skills but youre not trusting yourself to use them
the manipulation interpretation feels outdated to me tbh
I always look at surrounding cards for this one. next to something like the devil or 7 of swords? yeah maybe manipulation. but on its own I usually read it as misdirected energy or imposter syndrome
upright magician knows what they have and uses it. reversed magician either doesnt see their own power OR is using it wrong somehow
omg the blocked version interpretation makes so much sense. I always struggled with "everything reversed means the opposite" bc that feels too simplistic
like... the magician reversed still HAS all the elements on the table, they just cant access them right now
these replies are so helpful thank you!! the blocked energy vs opposite meaning distinction is really clicking for me. I think I was being too black and white about it
late to this thread but wanted to add something that really helped me with reversed cards in general
my approach is to think of it as the energy being turned inward instead of outward? so upright magician = manifesting out into the world, taking action, making things happen
reversed = that same energy but directed at yourself. which could look like self-doubt (not trusting your own abilities) OR it could be about needing to do more inner work before you're ready to act
not necessarily manipulation or trickery unless other cards in the spread point that way imo
ok so I used to always read the magician reversed as manipulation too and it honestly made me dread pulling it
but then I started journaling after every reading and I noticed a pattern - every time I got it reversed I was in a phase where I KNEW I had the skills to do something but just... wasn't doing it?? like self-sabotage almost
so now I read it as "you have everything you need, stop making excuses" lol. way more useful than just going oh no manipulation
the inward-turned energy thing someone mentioned above really clicks with that too. upright magician is action, reversed is all that potential just sitting there collecting dust
