ok so I've been reading tarot for about a year now and I feel like I have a decent handle on most cards but the six of swords trips me up every time
upright I get - it's like moving on, transition, leaving something behind to find peace. makes sense
but reversed?? I've seen it interpreted as like... resisting change? or being stuck? but also some books say it means returning to something you left?
those feel like totally different things to me lol. how do you guys decide which interpretation fits when it comes up reversed?
honestly the six of swords reversed is one of my faves to interpret because it really depends on context
for me if someone's asking about a decision they already made, it usually means they're having second thoughts or regrets. but if they're asking about something they haven't done yet, its more like theyre afraid to take the leap
does that make sense?
Oh this is such a good question, and I think the confusion actually tells us something important about this card.
The Six of Swords upright is about necessary transitions - moving away from troubled waters toward calmer shores. When reversed, that journey is disrupted somehow.
I read it based on three questions:
Usually the surrounding cards and the question itself point me toward which layer is relevant. Trust your intuition - if "returning" jumps out at you, there's probably a reason.
ok so update - i tried sarah's three questions thing on a reading i did last night and it actually helped so much??
like i asked about whether to stay in my current apartment or move closer to family and pulled the six of swords reversed again. and when i asked myself "am i resisting a change" the answer was immediately yes lol. i've been dragging my feet on this move for months even though i know it makes sense
so in that context it wasn't about returning to something or being stuck... it was literally me going "nope dont wanna deal with the logistics of moving" even though deep down i want to go
thank you both seriously, the context thing makes it feel way less overwhelming now. like its not some scary mystery meaning, its just reflecting what im already feeling
found this thread while googling the exact same question haha
for me the six of swords reversed almost always comes up when im trying to move on from something but keep looking back. like emotionally packing my bags but then unpacking them again if that makes sense?
i got it in a reading about an old friendship that ended badly and i kept wanting to reach out even though i knew it wasnt healthy. the reversed energy felt like... the boat is there, the water is there, but im the one refusing to get in
the three questions framework from this thread is really helpful tho, saving that for next time
