been going back and forth on this for a while and curious how other people read it
some readers I follow treat death reversed as flat out resistance to change - like you're digging your heels in and refusing to let something end that needs to end
but I've also seen it read as more of a soft version of the upright meaning, like the transition is just happening slower or quieter instead of all at once
I pulled it recently about a friendship that's been fading and honestly both interpretations kind of fit?? like I AM resisting letting it go, but it's also just naturally winding down on its own. anyone have a clearer way to tell which one applies
I love this question because both readings are valid, the trick is looking at what surrounds it.
If Death reversed shows up next to cards like The Chariot, Eight of Wands, or anything active, I lean toward resistance - there's momentum being blocked. If it's next to slower cards like Four of Swords or the Nines, I read it as a gentle, gradual transition instead.
With your friendship situation, it sounds like both are true at once, and that's okay. The cards whisper nuance, not a single verdict. You can be resisting the ending while it's also naturally happening - awareness of that is honestly the growth part.
I always default to resistance reading first tbh, but the surrounding cards thing sarah k mentioned makes so much sense. gonna pay more attention to that next time
the "resisting it while it's also naturally happening" thing you said is literally where I'm at with a job I know I've outgrown lol. never thought about reading the card that way
