ok so Ive been reading for about a year now and I feel like I have a decent grasp on most cards but the five of swords still trips me up
upright I get - conflict, winning at all costs, that hollow victory feeling. but reversed?? some sources say its about reconciliation and moving past conflict but others say its even MORE toxic, like the conflict is going underground or becoming passive aggressive
how do you all read the difference? do you lean more towards the 'things are getting better' interpretation or the 'things are getting worse but hidden' one?
This is actually one of the most debated reversals in the tarot community, and there's good reason for that ambiguity.
Historically speaking, the Five of Swords upright represents a pyrrhic victory - you won, but at what cost? The reversal doesn't necessarily flip this to 'loss' or 'peace.' From a symbolic perspective, I read it as the AFTERMATH of that conflict.
So: Are things healing? Or is resentment festering? Context becomes everything here. Look at the surrounding cards and the querent's situation. If there are Cups nearby, reconciliation is more likely. Swords or reversed Wands? The conflict may be going underground.
The card itself holds both possibilities - thats what makes it such a rich reversal to work with.
for me reversed five of swords is almost always about someone finally walking away from drama they didnt need to be in
like upright is 'I MUST win this' and reversed is 'wait... why am I even fighting about this'
honestly I always ask myself 'is this person the type to let things go or hold grudges' and that usually tells me which way to read it lol
the card can mean both and the querent's personality is what tips the scale imo
honestly the way I read it now is that reversed five of swords is like... the moment AFTER the conflict when you have to decide what to do with the aftermath
so whether its 'getting better' or 'going underground' depends on the other cards and the querent. like are they the type to actually process stuff or just bury it?
I used to get so frustrated with sources disagreeing until I realized reversals are just more nuanced than upright. theres no one answer because theres more possibilities
honestly the reversed version always hits me different. upright feels like that "i won but at what cost" energy whereas reversed is more like... finally letting go of a fight that wasnt worth having?
I got it reversed last month after a big argument with my sister and it basically told me to stop keeping score lol. we're good now
honestly I think both interpretations can be true and it depends on the surrounding cards and the situation
for me reversed usually shows up when someone is choosing NOT to engage in the fight, like walking away from drama. but I've also seen it when the conflict is still there, just hidden - like when everyone's being passive aggressive but pretending everything is fine lol
I ask myself: is this person (or me) avoiding conflict in a healthy way, or just burying it? the cards around it usually make that clear
this thread is exactly what I needed omg
I've always read reversed five of swords as 'things are cooling down' but then I pulled it in a reading last month and the situation was definitely NOT cooling down lol - it had just gone underground, like everyone stopped arguing out loud but you could feel the tension everywhere
so now I think context really matters? if the surrounding cards feel hopeful I lean towards reconciliation, but if the other cards are tense or murky I read it as conflict going quiet but not actually resolved
thanks to everyone in this thread, this is helping me think about it way differently
