been reading tarot for like 8 months now and every time i draw the hierophant it's upright, structured, kind of church-vibes energy which is fine
but today i finally got it reversed for the first time (asking about whether to leave my current job for a more unconventional path) and now i don't know how to feel about it
like is reversed hierophant always some big warning that i'm going against tradition in a bad way? or can it actually be a good sign when you're asking about breaking away from convention
genuinely dont know if i should be nervous or hopeful lol
Great question! From a symbolic perspective, the Hierophant reversed doesn't inherently signal you're 'going the wrong way' - it more often represents questioning established structures rather than blindly following them.
Historically, the Hierophant embodies institutional wisdom: religion, tradition, formal education. Reversed, the card frequently shows up when someone is ready to find their own truth outside those structures, rather than rejecting wisdom altogether.
Given your context (leaving convention for something unconventional), this reads to me as more validating than warning. It's worth noting reversed cards aren't automatically negative - they often just point to an inversion or personalization of the upright meaning.
following this because I had the exact same question a while back! for me it ended up meaning I needed to trust my own instincts over what everyone around me expected me to do
the church-vibes description had me laughing lol so accurate. also seconding what Thea said, reversed hierophant showing up for unconventional choices usually means go for it not stop
