ok so I've been reading with the same Rider-Waite deck for like 4 years and always felt kind of meh about it?? like it works fine but I never felt super connected
my friend lent me her Thoth deck last week and honestly the imagery hits SO differently. the colors are more intense and I feel like it pulls things out of me that RWS never did
but I'm also confused because a lot of the card meanings are slightly different so now I'm second-guessing myself on readings lol
has anyone else switched decks and felt like a total beginner again?? also would love recs for what decks people actually love using day to day. I want something with art that really resonates but isn't too esoteric for someone who learned with RWS
Oh this is such a beautiful transition moment! The cards whisper differently through different artwork, and that disorientation you're feeling is actually a sign that you're deepening your connection.
For RWS readers moving to something more evocative, I often recommend the Everyday Witch Tarot or the Modern Witch Tarot - they keep the RWS symbolism you know but with artwork that has way more personality.
If you love that Thoth intensity but want it more accessible, the Tarot Illuminati is gorgeous and bridges that gap really well.
Trust your inner knowing when choosing - if a deck makes you want to pick it up, that's your answer.
omg yes!! I switched from RWS to the Wildwood tarot and felt SO lost for like 2 months
but then something clicked and now I can't go back. the learning curve is worth it when you find a deck that actually speaks to you
the Linestrider tarot is amazing if you like minimalist art - it's RWS based so the meanings transfer really easily but the art is completely different vibe
I also love the Everyday Tarot for daily pulls, it's so cute and accessible
wait can I ask - when you say the Thoth meanings are different, what kinds of differences are you noticing? I've been curious about it but worried about the learning curve
the court cards are renamed (like knight/queen etc are different titles) and some of the minor arcana vibes feel more psychological/esoteric to me? like it goes deeper into astrology and kabbalah which I don't know much about yet
it's intimidating but also kind of exciting lol. I'm going to look into some of those recs, thank you all!!
omg the court card renaming in Thoth tripped me up so bad when I first tried it lol
I went back to RWS for like a month but kept thinking about the Thoth imagery. eventually I just made a little cheat sheet for the differences and that helped a ton
honestly I think feeling like a beginner again is kind of exciting though?? like you get to rediscover the cards with fresh eyes
omg yes feeling like a beginner again is SO real lol
i did the same thing switching from RWS to the Shadowscapes deck a couple years ago and it took me like a month before readings started clicking again. the imagery was so different my brain kept trying to map it onto RWS meanings and it just wasn't working
what helped me was doing daily single card pulls with the new deck and just... sitting with the image before even looking anything up. let the card tell you what IT means before you layer old meanings onto it
the Thoth is honestly a whole journey tho because of the Kabbalah influence. have you tried just using it intuitively for a bit and ignoring the "official" meanings? sometimes that unlocks it faster than studying
