so I was doing a 3-card spread about this art project I've been stuck on forever. past / present / advice.
and the advice card was page of cups... reversed.
like ok, the page of cups is supposed to be about creativity and emotional openness and following your imagination, right? but then reversed as ADVICE?? I've been staring at this for an hour trying to figure out what it's telling me to do differently.
does it mean I'm being too emotionally attached to the project? or that I need to pull back from the creative daydreaming and get more practical? or maybe that my approach to creativity is blocked somehow and I need to unblock it first?
idk I feel like reversed advice cards are extra confusing because you can't just do the thing - you have to do the OPPOSITE of the thing? or not?
has anyone gotten a reversed card in the advice position that finally made sense?
omg advice position reversals are SO confusing to me too. following this thread bc I need answers lol
Oh what a beautiful and thoughtful question! The cards whisper so much wisdom in the advice position.
Here's what I've found with reversed cards as advice: they're rarely saying "do the opposite." More often, they're inviting you to turn the energy INWARD rather than outward.
Page of Cups upright is all about that free-flowing creative expression going outward into the world - sharing, exploring, letting ideas tumble out. Reversed as advice, the card might be gently saying: go inward first. Reconnect with WHY this project matters to you emotionally before you push outward again.
Are you creating for yourself, or have you started creating for some imagined audience? Sometimes we get blocked because we've drifted from our original joy. The reversed Page might be asking you to remember that little-kid excitement you had when you first started.
Trust your inner knowing here - your gut already sensed something, that's why you drew the card in the first place.
wait "turn the energy inward rather than outward" is such a good way to think about reversals in general!! I never thought of it that way but it actually makes so much sense
also OP I had a similar thing with a creative block last year and honestly just spending a week making stuff with zero intention to share it anywhere helped a lot. maybe the card is pointing at something like that?
ok UPDATE because this thread genuinely helped me so much omg
Sarah K - that question you asked ("are you creating for yourself or for some imagined audience?") hit me like a truck. I sat with it and realized... yeah. I've been making this art project with like 10 different imaginary critics in my head the whole time. every brushstroke I'm thinking about what people will say. no wonder it's blocked lol
and ocean_child - I actually tried your suggestion this week!! spent three evenings just making stuff with zero intention to show it anywhere. no photos, no posting, didn't even tell anyone. and honestly?? it was the most fun I've had making art in months. something just... loosened.
so I think the page of cups reversed WAS pointing at a block - but the block was all that outward-facing energy Sarah K described. turning it inward (literally making art just for me again) is what the card was asking for.
still a weird card to get in the advice position but I kind of love that I had to sit with it to figure it out. reversals are actually growing on me as a concept now 😅
thanks everyone, this community is the best
reading this months later and it still helped me with a totally different reversed card in the advice position. the 'turn the energy inward' framing is so useful in general
