hi all! just got into tarot a few months ago and I've been using a borrowed Rider Waite from my friend
I want to get my own deck but there are SO many options and I'm overwhelmed lol
does anyone have recommendations for a good first deck? I've seen the Classic Rider Waite, the Radiant Rider Waite, and something called the Modern Witch Tarot?? not sure what to start with
budget is around $20-30 if that helps
I started with the classic RWS and honestly it was perfect! so many YouTube videos and books use it as a reference so learning was way easier
also well within your budget :)
Oh what a wonderful beginning! The Rider Waite Smith is a beautiful choice for your first deck - the imagery whispers symbolism on every card and it's the foundation for so many other decks.
The Modern Witch Tarot is a lovely reimagining of RWS with more diverse imagery - if that resonates with you, go for it! Trust what draws your eye when you look at the card backs.
the Modern Witch Tarot is SO beautiful though!! and like Sarah said the symbolism is basically the same as RWS
either way you cant go wrong honestly
thank you all so much!! I think I'm going to go with the classic RWS first and maybe pick up the Modern Witch later once I feel more comfortable. really appreciate all the input 🙏
late to this thread but just wanted to add - I started with the classic RWS too and honestly the guidebook that comes with it is really good for beginners
also if you ever want something a little different down the road, the Everyday Witch Tarot is super cute and still RWS-based so everything you learn transfers over!
but honestly just go with whatever deck feels right when you look at it. that gut feeling is part of the practice 🙂
just found this thread and had to reply!! I started with classic RWS too and honestly it was the best decision
the imagery is SO literal compared to other decks which makes it way easier to look up meanings when you're starting out. I tried using a more abstract deck first and it was really confusing lol
stick with the classic for a year or so and then branch out - you'll have a much better foundation for reading the artsy ones
