ok so I've been wanting to get into tarot for a while and I finally decided to just do it. went to look up decks and now I'm completely overwhelmed lol
everyone says start with Rider-Waite but then I see all these gorgeous modern decks and honestly the traditional art style feels a little stiff to me? like I want something I actually enjoy looking at
but I also don't want to make it harder on myself if Rider-Waite is important for learning the symbolism or whatever
do I just go with the classic or is it okay to start with something more visual? how did everyone else pick their first deck??
I started with a deck I found pretty (the Everyday Witch Tarot) instead of Rider-Waite and honestly no regrets!! if you love looking at your deck you'll actually use it
the symbolism is similar enough in most modern decks that you can still learn from guides and books
Welcome to the journey! This question comes up so often and I love it every time.
Here's what I tell everyone starting out: the deck that calls to you IS the right deck. The cards whisper louder when you have an emotional connection to the imagery.
That said - Rider-Waite (or a clone like the Universal Waite which has softer colours) is genuinely useful as a first deck because almost every book, website, and tutorial references it. You'll be able to follow along without translating.
But if you find a modern deck with RWS-based symbolism - like the Modern Witch Tarot or the Everyday Witch - you get the best of both worlds. Same core imagery, art you actually want to spend time with.
Trust your inner knowing. Pull up a few decks, see which one makes you feel something. That feeling matters.
seconding the Modern Witch Tarot - it's basically Rider-Waite but all the figures are witchy and modern and SO much more fun to look at. learned all the symbolism without even realising it
omg thank you all so much!! the Modern Witch Tarot looks amazing actually, going to look for it. and Sarah K that tip about RWS-based symbolism is super helpful - I didn't know that was even a thing
