The 22 Tarot Birth Cards

Every Birthday Carries Two Cards

One of these 22 archetypes is yours. It’s been there since the day you were born — quietly naming what your life keeps returning to.

In the tarot tradition, the 22 cards of the Major Arcana represent the deep, recurring patterns of a human life — falling in love, breaking down, finding a calling, surrendering, beginning again. Your tarot birth cards are the specific points on that arc that your birthdate has assigned to you.

Below, you’ll find every one of the 22 birth cards. Each entry is written for the card not as it appears in a single reading, but as a lifelong companion — the archetype someone with this card may notice quietly shaping their decades.

If you don’t yet know which is yours, the arcana calculator does the math from just your birthday.

About Tarot Birth Cards

What is a tarot birth card?

A tarot birth card is a specific Major Arcana card calculated from your birthday. According to the tradition popularized by Mary K. Greer, every birthdate encodes two cards: a Soul card (your deeper purpose) and a Personality card (how you tend to show up in the world). About half of people receive a single unified Birth card when their numbers reduce to a single digit.

How do I find my arcana number?

Add the month, day, and four-digit year of your birth together. If the result is greater than 22, sum the digits until you reach a number from 1 to 22 — that number is your arcana. For example, July 15, 1990 → 7 + 15 + 1990 = 2012 → 2 + 0 + 1 + 2 = 5, so the arcana is 5 (The Hierophant). Our free arcana calculator does the math automatically.

What's the difference between my arcana and my zodiac sign?

Your zodiac sign comes from astronomy — the position of the sun on your birthday. Your tarot birth cards come from numerology applied to the calendar date itself, then mapped to the symbolic language of the Major Arcana. The two systems aren't redundant: many people find their arcana names a side of themselves their sun sign misses.

Does my arcana card change?

Your Soul and Personality cards are fixed by your birthday and stay with you for life. Your Year Card, however, shifts each January 1 — it's calculated from your birth month, birth day, and the current calendar year. Many people find watching their Year Card change gives them a useful frame for what each year is asking of them.

Which of the 22 birth cards is the best one to have?

None of them. Every Major Arcana card carries gifts and challenges, and no card is inherently better or worse than another. The point of knowing your birth card isn't to be impressed by it — it's to recognize a pattern your life has been quietly organized around so you can engage with it on purpose.
